The University was founded in 1890 on the basis of a school of theology (also called the Lausanne Academy) that has been established in 1537. In 1898-1906 a new building was constructed for the University on the money given by the native of Lausanne Gavrylo Ryumin, who was an ancestor of the Russian Ruminih family. This building still has the symbolic name of "Ryumin’s Palace". Currently there are about 12,000 students and more than 2,200 researchers who study and work in a new and modern campus at the University of Lausanne, located on the banks of Geneva Lake.
