University of Lucerne is the youngest and smallest University in Switzerland. In 1547, on the initiative of the city Council there was established a higher education institution in Lucerne, which was soon divided into gymnasium (higher secondary school) and Lyceum of the university level. Initially, the University of Lucerne operated as a Lyceum with mandatory learning of theology. But after founding the second faculty of the Humanities (1993) and Law faculty (2001) and according to the Educational Act about the University education of 2000, Lucerne Lyceum was reorganized into a full-fledged University with three faculties, which is the modern University of Lucerne now.

The number of students since the day of the "University period" has increased from 250 to 2,700 students. The University of Lucerne is in the leading positions in higher education in Central Switzerland, and is a key institution in research and education area. The University generates economic life and is a driving force in the regional and cross-regional development of Central Switzerland.
