University of Zurich is the largest university in Switzerland, which currently provides the education for more than 26,000 students. This university can be referred to the group of "the oldest universities" in Switzerland, as its history dates back to 1525. Though in 1833 the University of Zurich had officially adopted existing form and name, when 3 colleges of Theology, Law and Medicine were united with newly opened Faculty of Philosophy.
The fact that the University of Zurich was established independently from monarch or church in the republican state outlined it from among the others. One of the initiators of the university was a historian and literary scholar Johann Caspar von Orelli.

Two thousand lecturers in 140 special institutes teach a wide range of subjects and courses in the country. The University of Zurich ranks first in Switzerland by the number of students and graduates. The largest faculty is a Faculty of Philosophy, which provides study courses for about 48% of the total number of students. Faculties of Medicine, Law and Economics are the most popular.
