Medical education is now very popular, and specialists with a high level of competence in this area are more likely to get a prestigious and highly paid work compared to specialists in other areas.

More and more applicants from Ukraine dream of studying medicine abroad. Austria is a great option for mastering the medical professions. The diploma of Austrian universities is valid in all European countries, but the cost of training is about 700 euros per 1 semester, which is much better opportunity compared to prestigious universities in other countries (USA, Canada, Switzerland, Great Britain).

Medical education is available at three public universities (Vienna Medical University, Medical University of Graz, Medical University of Innsbruck) and three private medical universities (Medical University of Paracelsus), at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Linz and at the base of eight Universities of Applied Sciences (FH) (the most popular of them - Vienna University of Applied Sciences and University of Applied Sciences Joanneum in Graz).

However, due to the large number of people wishing to study medicine in this country, quotas were introduced (restrictions on the number of foreign students): 75% of the total number of places are granted to Austrian citizens, 20%- to EU citizens, and only 5% - allocated to citizens of other countries (including Ukraine). Therefore, in order to get the desired place at the Medical University of Austria, you need to make a lot of effort. However, we should mention, the result worth it.

What do you need to know about the admission process to Austrian universities to study medicine?

  1. ENTRANCE EXAM

Entrance exam MedAT-H - mandatory for all applicants, without exception. Registration takes place online and only once a year (approximately in March). The cost is 110 euros. After registration, you will receive a personal number, which you must have available on the day of the exam, which will take place in around July. In addition to the number, you will only need a passport. Means and devices (calculators, notebooks, markers and even pens) are prohibited.

Usually, the test takes place simultaneously at all public universities, so you can apply only to one educational institution.

The entrance exam consists of 4 blocks:

  • BMS - Multiple Choice (one correct answer from several offered). Testing general knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics at the school level. Covers 40% of the total result.
  • TV - an understanding of the content read - 10%.
  • KFF - cognitive abilities - 40%.
  • SE - decision making in a social context - 10%.

  1. THE NECESSARY LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE GERMAN LANGUAGE

All universities in Austria require applicants to have knowledge of the German language at C1 level (for some universities of applied sciences (FH), the B2 level is sufficient). However, is it possible to get a place at the university with a level lower than C1? YES. If you have already mastered the language at A2 level, this is enough for admission. But you will need to take preparatory courses on the basis of the chosen university within one year and increase your knowledge of the German language to B2 level. Then go through another year of training in specialized subjects at the school level (physics, chemistry, biology and German to level C1). This condition does not apply to universities of applied sciences (FH).
