The profession of a doctor requires special responsibility, self-discipline and does not allow the right to make a mistake. Medical education in Germany sets a high standard for future medical professionals. Starting from strict conditions of selection procedure and high competition for a place, compulsory combination of a practice with a theory, state examinations, stages of practical experience in the role of an intern, assistant, etc., until you get the cherished license for independent medical practice - with all this you will encounter on the way to the cherished dream!

What is medical education in Germany, what is its structure?

The beginning of training in the direction of medicine in most universities is possible only from Winter Semester that means, from October intake. The term of study usually lasts for 6 years and 3 months, but in some cases, it may be longer. Indeed, in case of medical study, the especially important thing is not speed, but quality. The entire period of study can be conditionally divided into 3 periods, the first and the third periods end with a mandatory state exam:
1. Pre-clinical period lasts for 4 semesters (2 years). Pre-clinical period of study implies to a basic knowledge of humanities, medical and natural sciences. Students get first practical skills in patient care and emergency first aid.
2. Clinical period is with a total duration of 6 semesters (3 years). Clinical period of study includes the study of natural science and clinical disciplines of general pathology and methods of laboratory and medical examination. The main purpose of Clinical period is to obtain knowledge in the field of clinical disciplines, principles and algorithm of diagnosis, as well as the development of a treatment plan.
3. Practice lasts for 1 year. The period of Practice involves the refinement of knowledge and skills acquired during the entire period of study. Students under the guidance of their doctor-curator are involved into the activities with the aim of further enhancing the knowledge in the field of medicine, and may also take part in clinical discussions (conferences).

After graduating from a medical school, a graduate gains access to the first professional level, namely a medical practitioner. The young specialist should work for 1.5 years as a medical practitioner and gain experience and positive recommendations. After that, the specialist moves to the next professional level and can work as an assistant doctor. Only after that, several years in a row, the assistant doctor becomes a specialist doctor that gets a license for his own practice.

Foreign doctors who have already completed internship training and medical residency after confirming their diploma in Germany qualify as assistant doctors.
What is important to consider when choosing a university and applying?

Education in Germany is available to everyone; students, citizens of countries not belonging to the countries of the European Community, are no exception. It is worth noting that students from non-EU countries have a quota of 5-8%. The entrance exam is missing. Students get an acceptance to study based on previous academic achievements. Therefore, the knowledge of the German language and the average score of the school certificate and further education in the Ukrainian university are taken into consideration. For citizens of EU countries are allowed to take TMS test, the results of which can be taken into account instead of the previous academic achievements of the school certificate and university studies. For non-EU citizens, this test is not relevant.

When choosing a German university, you should take into account the ranking of the institution, the passing score and its capabilities. It is obvious that in such educational institutions as Heidelberg University, Humboldt University, LMU, the criteria for admission will be significantly higher than at the universities in smaller cities, such as the University of Magdeburg, the University of Sarland, and others. Choosing a medical school in Germany you should also pay attention to its location, the availability of the specialization and the level of technical equipment.

From our experience, we can say that the majority of our students choose universities for study in the Western part of the Federal Republic of Germany and in the lands of Bovaria and Baden-Württemberg.

What is the tuition fee?

There is no tuition fee at state universities in Germany; students pay only a semester fee according to which they receive a free travel ticket and other student privileges. Exceptions are educational institutions located in Baden Württemberg. The payment there is 1,500 euros for 1 semester. All students are allowed to work for 20 hours a week. However, in case of “Human Medicine” study, you should not count on the possibility of combining study and work. According to our students’ opinions, due to the high studyload, there is no time for work.
