I pronounce these farewell words as a mantra for my students on the eve of the IELTS test.
And if you are already reading the second line of my article, then most likely you are also partaking at this very exam.
So, not superfluous, these words will be for you) Without water and pathos!
On the way to the exam
A priority! Make sure that you read and fully understand the IELTS policy and conditions of the test, they (give a tooth!) Contain information of critical importance. Surely, this information is duplicated in the Test Takers Information section of the application form that you filled out during registration.
On the eve of the day X, check the time of the test start and "plan" the route to the venue in advance. When I said on the eve, I meant in a couple of days) And it is important! Double check the location address: sometimes namesakes of the streets and the organizing centers themselves sometimes happen.
😞 If you are late for the exam, you are likely to be disqualified.
On the way ...
- Put the phone (tablet, PC, and what else are you armed with) to flight mode or turn it off completely. You will leave all this outside the audience of the exam with all other personal things.
- Listening, Reading and Writing modules will take 2 hours 40 minutes. I remind you: there are no breaks during the exam.
“Lunch boxes are also non grata on the exam, so take care of a hearty breakfast!” You can take water for the exam, but in a transparent bottle, and not in glass.
Documents
- Before the test itself, the staff of the examination center will verify your identity. The document that was provided to you during registration for the exam clearly instructs which document as the personal identifier (ID) you need to present on the day of the test.
😞 If you cannot present the correct document, you will be guaranteed not to be admitted to the test.
- As a measure of enhanced security, you will be photographed before you take a place in the examination room. This photo will be applied to the Test Report Form. It's nothing …. I've heard that in some countries they also take fingerprints.
During the test
- on the table in front of you, only a pencil, pen, elastic, and an identity document are allowed.
- if necessary, go out, raise your hand to attract the attention of the observer (observer, hmm, it sounds like in the next election). Try not to disturb other subjects.
- If there is an urgent need to ask a question - see the previous paragraph and proceed according to the same scheme. The principle is not to bother anyone.
- When the time comes for the Listening part, make sure you hear the recording you are playing well enough. On the contrary, again, raise your hand to attract the attention of the observer.
- After listening, 10 minutes are given to move answers to a special form (answer sheet. But at the same time after the reading section (Reading) these 10 minutes will not be.
- After listening, 10 minutes are given for transferring answers to a special form (answer sheet. But there will not be these 10 minutes after the Reading section. Therefore, calculate the total time for this section taking into account the necessary transfer of answers to the examination form. And better after each of the 4 sections of this part of the exam.
Approaching the finish line
- Having completed all the tasks before the finish whistle, continue to remain in place. And only after receiving the permission of the observer, you can leave the audience.
- If you suspect that your exam result may be worse than expected due to external factors (poor audibility, poor audio recording, extraneous noise from the outside, etc.), do not hesitate to inform the observer about it.
- If you wish or need to file a complaint about your negative experience in passing the test, you can do this within one week from the date of passing the test by filling out The Complaint Form), you can get it on request at the examination center).
Special conditions
If it is necessary to arrange special conditions for you during the test (special physical restrictions, perception difficulties, etc.), make a request to the examination center when registering for the exam, i.e. 6 weeks before the exam date.
And some more ...
Maintain even breathing and drinking balance throughout the test. You do not need unnecessary stress factors, such as malaise, dehydration and dizziness.
You should be aware of other strategic issues during the exam. During the preparation for international exams (IELTS, FCE; CAE; BEC) I train students in tactical techniques.
The sequence of actions when completing 8 tasks of the Reading section, refined actions during the minute planning the response to the main part of Speaking, tactics of proofreading after completing Writing Parts, awareness of the time and its effective distribution, and much more that can not only save you time and meet the allotted slot, but also with the synergy of knowledge + presentation to cope with the tasks.
