Heidelberg University is the oldest educational establishment in Germany, as well as a research institution with an international reputation. The University of Heidelberg is strong theoretically and methodologically, which is obviously reflected in all degree programs and disciplinary culture. Eleven researchers and professors of the University of Heidelberg were awarded Nobel Prizes for achievements in the field of chemistry, medicine, physics. The following oustanding people studied at Heidelberg University: Reformer Philip Melanchton, Baroque poet Martin Opitz, composer Robert Schumann, writer Joseph von Eichendorff, philosopher Hannah Arendt, psychoanalyst Margaret Micherlich and former Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl; also Monica Harms, the first woman to become a Federal Advocate-General, and Wolfgang Ketterle, who won the Nobel Prize for Physics.

Less DetailsIf you have an IB diploma from an international school, then you have every chance of getting your education document approved and you can apply for the 1st semester of the program. However, if you have a secondary school leaving certificate from a Non-EU country, then such a document is not equivalent to a German abitur, and you will be able to enroll in an educational institution for foreigners - Studienkolleg. Training here usually lasts two semesters, each semester can be repeated one more time. Upon completion, all students take an external FSP assessment.
To obtain admission to study at Studienkolleg Heidelberg, you must provide sufficient proof of the German language knowledge at B2 / C1 level, as well as pass an entrance exam in German.
The list of subjects studied at Studienkolleg depends on the desired direction for further study at the university. To prepare for the study at the Faculty of Medicine and Biology (M-course), the following subjects are needed: German, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics. For the Humanity fields of study (G-course), the following subjects are needed: German, Literature, History, Sociology or Geography. Technical and Mathematical fields of study (T-course) require the following subjects: German, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Computer Science (depending on the specialty). Economic fields of study (W-course) requires the following subjects: German, Business Economics or Accounting, English, Sociology or Geography or Computer Science (depending on the specialty).
The language of instruction for all Bachelor's degree programs and for most of the Master's degree programs at the University of Heidelberg is German. Good knowledge of German at C1 level is a prerequisite for the enrollment. Certificates accepted for study in German are the followings: DSH-2; Goethe-Zertificate C2; Test DaF (4444); Feststellungsprüfung; OSD C2; telc C1. The following certificates are accepted for Master's degree programs study in English: TOEFL (PBT); TOEFL (CBT); TOEFL (IBT); IELTS; CAE; TOEIC.
Prospective international students who have a qualification equivalent to a German university entrant and who would like to improve their subject knowledge and specific language skills in a subject they want to study at the University of Heidelberg can apply for a corresponding semester basic course (Propädeutisches Vorsemester) at the International Study Center.
